属格の多様性

Quirk et al. (1985) の属格の機能の分類

現代英語の所有格に相当する属格は、多様な機能で使用されることがよく知られています。古英語では、数は比較的少なめながら、動詞の目的語として名詞の属格形が現れることもありました。Quirk et al. (1985) は、その機能を8つに分類しています。以下にそれをリストしてみますが、例文は各機能について1つだけに減らして表示していますので、詳しくは原文をご覧ください。

(a) Possessive genitive (my wife’s father)
(b) Subjective genitive (the boy’s application)
(c) Objective genitive (the family’s support)
(d) Genitive of origin (the girl’s story)
(e) Descriptive genitive (a women’s college)
(f) Genitive of measure (ten days’ absence)
(g) Genitive of attribute (the victim’s courage)
(h) Partitive genitive (the Baby’s eyes)

しかしながら、それぞれの範疇が明確に定義されているわけではなく、分類がかなり直観によるものであることはQuirk et al. 自身も認めるところです。実際この分類について “in part arbitrary” (p. 322) であるとの断り書きがあります。しかしながら、属格の機能の多様性に気づき、ある程度区分を設けながら理解していく手がかりとしては、大変わかりやすいと思います。

Altenberg (1982) の分類

Quirk et al. (1985) の属格の分類を紹介しましたので、今度は、Altenberg (1982: 152-153)のものを紹介してみたいと思います。Altenberg自身が、Poutsma (1914: 40f)に手を加えたものと断った上で分類を試みたもので、こちらは6種類になります。

(a) The possessive genitive (e.g. John’s hat)
(b) The genitive of origin (e.g. Shakespeare’s works)
(c) The subjective genitive (e.g. John’s arrival)
(d) The objective genitve (e.g. the city’s destruction)
(e) The appositive genitive (e.g. Dublin’s fair city)
(f) The genitive of measure (e.g. an hour’s rest)

さらにAltenbergは、”Apart from these six types, another group is sometimes added, often vaguely labelled the ‘descriptive’ genitive. This is a poorly defined category in which the function of the Mod[ifier] is to characterize or describe the Head in various respects (eg New Year’s Day)” と述べています。

言語学習の場面で、属格の機能が問題となることも少なくないと思いますが、そもそも機能の分類自体に流動的な側面があるのも事実です。
