language regard — caféとrestaurant

Laura Wrightの著書、The Social Life of Words: A Historical Approach の中に、caféとrestaurantという語がどのように19世紀社会の中に浸透していったのかを分析した面白い章がありました。1820年代にはようやく英語の中で少しずつ使われるようになってきたばかりでまだまだマージナルであった2つの語が、19世紀を通じて急速に広がっていく様子がデータとともに示されています。

これを説明するのに、Wrightはlanguage regardという概念を使用します。この概念については、もともとPreston (2011)のアプローチを採用したもので、Wright (2023: 102)も以下のように述べています。

The language regard approach to lexical change was pioneered by Dennis Preston, who observed that the way in which speakers regard other people’s language can drive language change (Preston 2011).

さらにこの概念をわかりやすく示したものとして、Chamber (2018)への言及もなされています。(p. 102)

Chambers (2018) presented Preston’s language-regard as a four-stage schema:

Speakers notice a linguistic feature not in their own repertoire,

Speakers classify it according to some perceived social value,

Speakers imbue the linguistic feature with that social value, and

Speakers react by adopting the new linguistic feature into their own speech and abandoning their previous feature for that item.

ちなみにWright (2023: 118)には、BNCにおける語彙の分布についてのデータも掲載されています。これを見ると、現在ではcafeやrestaurantという語がどれほどよく英語に定着しているかがわかります。
