Dictionaries of the Scots Languageは、それぞれ別のプロジェクトとしてスタートした

A Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) (before 1700)
The Scottish National Dictionary Association (SND) (1700-)

を統合した辞書で、オンラインでの検索が可能です。統合により、全体としてSctosの歴史的全貌を明らかにしてくれる史的辞書となっています。検索画面では、DOSTのみ、SNDのみの指定も可能です。

Scottish Building Terms

Pride (1987)の”Scottish Building Terms”では、スコットランドで使用される建築分野の語彙をグロッサリー形式で紹介してくれる論文です。

St Andrewsに住んでいたときに、建物に関する呼び方などが英語学習で学んだものとは異なることがあることに気づいていましたが、体系的に学ぶ機会はありませんでした。論文自体も短いですし、グロッサリーも決して分量が多いとはいえませんが、この論文では建物の図解とともに提示されていますので、いわゆるイングランドの語彙との違いを概観するのにはとても良いと思います。

著者自身、建築に関する本の多くがイングランドで出版されていること、スコットランドの建築の場面でも、イングランドの様式や建築家がかかわることが多いことで、この分野のスコットランドの語彙が消えていくのではないかと感じているようです。

たとえば、St Andrewsの有名なSt Regulus教会については、

“To quote one small example, St Regulus Church in St Andrews (that is the one with the four-neuked tower) was built (and designed) by Yorkshire masons; and naturally they brought their techniques and their language, containing words, no doubt, which they had learned from the French masons after the Norman Conquest.” (p. 30)

という記述がありました。St Andrewsに１度行くと、忘れることができないほど印象的な教会です。

また建築の教科書については、

“At the School of Architecture, in my time at least, all the text books on building construction were produced in England …” (p. 30)

と書かれています。
