Absolute Infinitiveの変化の歴史

論文集の形式になっていますが、全体としてabsolute infinitiveという1つのテーマを掘り下げる著書のようになっています。Absolute infinitiveとは、以下の文中のto tell the truthのような不定詞句になります。

“The volume seeks to examine the so-called ‘absolute infinitive’, such as to tell the truth, not only from a diachronic perspective but also from synchronic or stylistic viewpoints” (p. 1)

Absolute infinitiveとは、Mitchell (1985: 405)によれば、Callaway (1913: 169)の用語で、Mätzner (1885: III, 54)のunäbhangige Infinitiveを翻訳したものとのことです。 (cf. p. 2)

各章の著者が、それぞれの専門分野の文献を調査し、全体として中英語後期から19世紀までのabsolute infinitiveの史的流れをたどることができるようになっています。特にsay, speak, tellについては、どの章でも共通に取り上げられているところが特徴的です。

表現のパターンや、語順（文のinitial positionに現れるか、medial positionに現れるかなど）、その機能、副詞との共起などが、各章で議論されています。
