英語の構文の話 — try and V, go and V, come and V

try and V, go and V, come and V

以前にtry to doと同様の意味を表す構文として使用されるtry and doについて議論したことがあります (Iyeiri et al. 2013)。アメリカ英語の専門性の高い話し言葉を収録したCorpus of Spoken Professional American Englishを使用して、どのような場面でtry and doタイプの構文が起こるかを議論しました。一般にはイギリス英語に多いと言われてますが、アメリカ英語でも観察可能です。

これと類似の構文として、go and Vというタイプがあります。Stefanowitsch (2000), “The English GO-(Prt)-AND-VERB construction”が、主に認知的な立場から広く議論しています。try and do構文は、doの部分（他の動詞も可）がbare formであることが要件となっていますが、go and Vの方はもう少し広く使用されるようです。I went and bought a weight bench, and don’t ever hardly use it (Stefanowitsch 2000: 259)のような文が典型的ですが、goの部分は、go around, go out, go in, go back, go aheadなども起こるようです。意味するところが文字通りであるか抽象的であるかなども分析されています。

これを読んだ後に『コーパス研究の展望』（石川慎一郎、長谷部陽一郎、住吉誠 著）を読んでいましたら、その第1章（石川氏執筆部分）でcome and V構文が議論されていたので、大変興味深いと思いました。come and seeのような構文です。こちらも普通に使用する構文ですが、コーパスで調査をしてみることで、その特徴が浮かび上がってくることがわかります。
